About Us

International Alzheimer’s Organization is a Canadian charitable organization that promotes health in the community, provides caregiving and health care services to people who have Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, and funds vital research for a cure. Alzheimer’s is a disease that gradually robs sufferers of their memory and ability to care for themselves.

Over 181, 000 Ontarians have dementia today; that number will increase 40% by 2038. Alzheimer’s is the seventh current leading cause of death in Canada. With the first baby boomers turning 65 in 2011, the annual total cost, including direct, indirect, and opportunity costs, will increase by more than $770 million per year through 2020. We are working with the community to achieve our goal of preventing the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

The needs of patients with Alzheimer’s disease are complex and change with disease progression. In addition to drugs, non-drug interventions are also used. The latter are often designed to alleviate accompanying symptoms, such as depression, restlessness, sleep disorders, and aggressive behavior, or improve cognitive function and retentiveness. Other non-drug approaches attempt to strengthen patients’ competence in their daily activities and support caregiving relatives. That is why funding research for a cure is vital to our organization and creating awareness to prevent this disease and other forms of dementia.

Individuals, foundations, and corporations are the primary source of funding for the organization. Through your generous donations, the organization funds essential dementia research in Canada, provides year-long, vital programs and services to people with dementia and their families, and promotes public education about prevention and early diagnosis of dementia.

Please help us find a cure by advocating; tiny drops fill a water pot. With our aging population, we must further medical advances in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s
